And still the excitement continues!

Postby tonystott » Fri Sep 07, 2012 5:54 pm

A couple of days ago, I took Gary, a visitor from Sydney for a ride in my TI. He was staying at the caravan park next to the boat ramp, and was using his Outback whenever he could, so getting him a ride in the TI was always on the cards!

The day was pretty windy, eventually reaching over 30 knots, but when we headed out it was probably no more than 15-20. We tacked out of the Forster channel, against the incoming tide, and made a quick decision when we poked the nose outside to do a U-turn, and shake out the reef. I discovered that the TI surfs way better with both seats occupied, and we covered about 200 metres with only about three waves! Yahoo! I prepared to return to the ramp (as I had suggested it would only be around 30 minutes for the trip) but Gary said he wasn't in a hurry, so we pressed on for another four hours!

It was a great "demo" sail, and Gary liked the idea of skimming along at up to 7 1/2 knots on flat water with the remnants of the incoming tidal flow into the huge lake! Eventually we headed back, into the wind, but now with a pretty weak favourable tide heading out again, but the wind was really picking up.

When we reached the Boat Harbour and furled the sail, I discovered that only having one Miragedrive on board (giving Gary a ride was a spur of the moment thing) I could not overcvome the windage from what was now a good 30+ knots headwind. So I took the cautious approach and ducked into the lee of the jetty (see photo) and pulled into the tiniest of beaches there, prepared to stay overnight if necessary until the wind subsided.

The Gary had a brainwave, and with the help of a friend who grabbed Gary's drive from his van, we removed the mast, and Gary fitted his Mk1 Miragedrive. This time we had heaps of horsepower (don't call me a wuss LOL) and shot back into the wind and to the beach next to the ramp.

Getting back onto the trailer would have been a struggle, but I attached a 15 metre anchor line to the stern, so it was a doddle to line up the hull onto the trailer despite the fierce crosswind.

Damage report? The cap popped off the longest vertical batten, which caused a diagonal crease as the sail sagged where the second batten ended, and I discovered that a small section of the long batten's pocket has torn, Not too bad considering we had spent more than two hours going to windward with a partly reefed sail. Everything else was perfect!

Another awesome day. I have lost count, but I reckon I must be close to 40 trips in my first three months of owning a TI. I think I am getting my money's worth!

It can't always be that exciting Tony.
In SA we have an interesting coastline with the Gulfs and Murray Mouth.
I wondered if the early explorers had missed not finding the inland sea they searched for.
Only having longboats and not TIs you could understand that.
So I decided to explore the top of Spencer Gulf, leaving from Port Augusta, as in map below.

We didn't have the exciting wind but it surely was scenic with the Flinders Ranges in the distance and the amazing bird life.
So we continued until there wasn't enough water to float the TI and we had to get out and walk.
This is as far as we could get and you can see the pebbly bottom.

An interesting 4 hour round trip.
We ended up driving to the causway where the Gulf is about 1 metre wide.
The explorers were right, it doesn't open up to an inland sea.

Brian

Couldn't agree more! I reckon I have taken my TI out on about 40 trips since I started three months ago, and the huge majority of those outings didn't generate anything to write home about. Some days, the most excitement I got was sneaking up on a turtle and watching it crash-dive when it suddenly notices me! Other times, when the day is almost lacking any wind, I enjoy gliding along in the tide, leaning over so my shadow blocks reflections, and looking for fish on the bottom five or more metres below. Cool...

I have always regretted that during my 4 years in SA, I never explored the Joseph Banks group of islands, which I have been told could almost rival the Whitsundays. I hope you get the opportunity to explore them.

Hi Tony & Tony.
Not much in the way of photos.
This is the last bridge before the top of the Gulf with Flinders Ranges in the background.

I agree re Joseph Banks group. I have sailed there and Whitsundays.
My favourite spot is Memory Cove, South of Port Lincoln -

That's my Maroon Young 7.8 on the right, the boat before the TI.

Tomorrow I head off to Nelson/Glenelg River for 5 days.
Will try and take a few photos although I don't expect a lot of excitement.

Not quite the antipathy of excitement. This is how exciting the dog found Glenelg River.
Image

The river is lined with shacks of a kind. They use them to moor their boats but because it is
a National Park, they are not allowed to stay in their shacks or have kitchens etc.
Image

We stayed at a caravan park and I used a new app on my iPhone to create a 360' panorama.
I understand that the iPhone 5 has this built in but I'm not one of the 2 million pre orders and
bought the app for 99c instead. This is the link and use the mouse to pan.

As far as the sailing went, it didn't much. There are high limestone cliffs.
I have a wind indicator on the top of my mast and I couldn't believe how it did 360' and 180' turns.
I think the wind was swirling around as a result of the cliffs so we ended up pedalling for most of
the four hours.

A lovely place but I wouldn't bother with the TI if I went back.
Cheers,
Brian
